Bigpauluk1, The price of diesel will change as of this November due to the EU insisting that the current derogation on Red diesel for leisure boat usage must end. In the past the UK has successfully applied for derogation to allow diesel for leisure use to be sold at a far lower tax rate than the rest of Europe and now the EU are refusing to allow this to continue. Ironically this would mean the UK going from the cheapest leisure diesel in the EU to some of the most expensive due to normal diesel in the UK being amongst the most heavily taxed. However whilst the following is not yet fact, it is looking more and more likely to be the adopted outcome for the future and in all honesty probably the best outcome we could have wished for. Red diesel used for heating on a boat beyond November should still be taxed at the current rates with only the amount of diesel used for propulsion being taxed at the normal rate. The problem is how to enforce or monitor this. Two tanks? Red and White diesel? owners keeping mileage logs etc. It is looking like HM Customs will accept self certification from owners on which split of Red diesel will be used for propulsion and which is used for heating. Whilst owners could suggest they use any split, eg 90% heating 10% propulsion, HM customs have suggested that 40% heating and 60% propulsion would be a more normal acceptable split and anything other than this would require records kept to prove actual usage for both. So it is looking like diesel for boating use will rise from November, but overall only for 60% of that used, which is much better than had been feared. Having had time to give this a little thought, and had a look at Mr Fisher s Duette (isn t she a pretty thing? :-) ) it seems to me that a boat of this size just isn t long enough to justify carrying a quant…. You really need a boat with side decks wide enough to walk along, and enough directional stability to allow you to drive her forward with a long steady push, and a 14 ft boat with 7ft beam is just going to yaw like a pig rather than go forward if you try to quant in the traditional manner (goodness knows I have enough trouble holding my 28 x 8 ft boat straight when going slowly under quant). The alternative is to stand still (probably in the cockpit?) and use the quant like a punt pole (do they have proper name for this stick?), which kinda defeats the object. Seems to me you d get a lot more motion for a lot less effort using either a pair of oars (halfdecker fashion), or perhaps a single oar and scull over the stern…. Would be a lot easier to store too. One other thought – if you need the quant to get off the mud when it s shallow, a short oar will do the job…. But if you plan to use the quant to move when the wind dies it needs to be long enough to reach the bottom, which could be 10-12 ft down, so the kind of quant length you can accommodate on a short boat (even up the shrouds) isn t going to be enough to do a sensible job for you…. ….but good luck with the project, whatever you decide…..waiting to see loads of piccies :-) it's a bit blowy, best put a reef in the burgee... Loaded up with some provisions and set off for the days cruising. The sun came out and we headed for Oulton Broad only passed about five other boats all the way there, we then had our first experience of a private boat going rather more quickly than the speed limit. Now considering we were in the Alpha Corsair and some of the comments about it snaking that I have found on here, up to this point I had found it quite easy to handle for such a long boat (42 foot) it appears to be a real pig when you get somebody else s bow wave hit the back of it and took a bit of correcting before we were back on course, unfortunately this was the first time my mother had tried to steer the boat and instead of trying to correct it just let go of the wheel and said in a rather loud voice NIGEL HELP. We had decided to cross Braydon Waters the next day so then headed for St Olaves as it was only early afternoon. When we got there, there was one boat already moored up stern on and another boat that was moored side on further down, with a third boat just in front of us. I slowed down and watched the boat in front of us try to moor up with his bow thrusters going flat out but the tide was still coming in at quite a rate and he was being blown all over the place eventually drifting back past us and suggesting we had a go first. Now I remember from years ago that this wasn t an easy place to moor with the strong currents however on that occasion I was with a number of younger people and the mooring was a lot busier so we had loads of help. This time it seemed that one of the two boats moored wanted to keep themselves to themselves and so only had the offer of any help from the second boat. This sadly was moored in the wrong place to be of much assistance i.e. to walk along and drag us in. Anyway the first attempt was a night mare I hadn t gone far enough along and as soon as I swung the bow out the boat just drifted straight past the moorings and past the third waiting boat, who then decided to try again after a couple more attempts by the third boat and me just sitting in the middle of the river unable to do anything apart from wait they eventually managed to moor up. It was now my turn to try again this time I went right up to the bridge before tuning and it paid off as I reversed back we were being moved along closer to the third boat by the tide which enabled us to throw them a rope from the stern and the walked us back whilst I threw the mud plug in to stop our bow from swinging anymore and smashing into their boat. Success at last and time for another one of those G & T s and maybe a bottle of red. Also decided to give the Broads coffee a go as we had bought a bottle of rum with us. Photo's to follow when I get a chance to download them. Nige! I very recently went to buy a boat, she was tired but I realy thought I could do something with her.BUT I decided to have a survey and the surveyor found four areas about the size of a large dinner plate where it had delaminated, and he advised me not to buy it as it would cost about GB Pounds 10,000 to put right!! nedless to say I didn't buy it :( So im still looking :confuse: Buyer Beware this didn't show when it was in the water brian http://www.the-norfolk-broads.co.uk/viewmessages.cfm?Forum=22&Topic=14899&srow=10&erow=20 stopper1941@the-norfolk-broads.co.uk (stopper1941) Mon, 06 Oct 2008 15:25:31 PST General Chat http://www.the-norfolk-broads.co.uk/replytotopic.cfm?Forum=22&Topic=14899 North Norfolk Coastline Yep Gill and i (sounds posh) often pop over to Wells to have fish and chips on the Harbour front, :) roya Bittern code 57. We hired Pacific Shadow from Pacific cruisers in Loddon and it was a real pleasure to do business with them. The boat was immaculate inside with, apart from its very full inventory, things like matches, dishclothes etc ready for us. It was in extremely good mechanical condition and the engine and filters never needed any attention although we checked things daily as a matter of course. Everything worked as it should, although the gas oven was a bit of a challenge for our all electric households. Richard and Fiona were most welcoming and extremely helpful, we felt valued as customers but treated as friends. Nothing was too much trouble, its easy to see why their business is so well thought of. No prizes for guessing where will be hiring from in future. Red Mill is a listed 'escape retreat' and I expect you're getting exactly what you've ordered. The quay heading 30 feet from the mill can take a dayboat, and your nearest neighbours just downriver, did moor a small yacht on their frontage, but this is no place for the inexpert. Rise and fall is about 3 metres and the tide is vicious, so you'd have to convince any boatyard you knew how to look after and could handle a boat in that area. Most wouldn't want to hire in those circumstances, but there used to be dayboats available from the St Olaves yards, and Goodchild Marine had one. Googling gets you there as usual. All other advice is sound. http://www.the-norfolk-broads.co.uk/viewmessages.cfm?Forum=22&Topic=14912&srow=1&erow=4 Realaler@the-norfolk-broads.co.uk (Realaler) Mon, 06 Oct 2008 12:51:20 PST General Chat http://www.the-norfolk-broads.co.uk/replytotopic.cfm?Forum=22&Topic=14912 Winterisation Yes I agree BA - I did try to make that point in an earlier post but somehow this appears to have been deleted. I am glad that you have clarified the situation as winterisation is ok left if you live locally but can be a different game if you live at a distance.
